TTYTTY is an acronym for TeleTYpewriter, and is also referred to as TDD, or Telecommunications Device for the Deaf. The TTY consists of a keyboard and a display screen. A TTY converts letters that are typed into electrical signals that can travel over analog telephone lines. When the signals reach their destination, the TTY converts them back into letters which either appear on a display screen, are printed out on paper, or both.
TTYs may be used by persons who are deaf, or have speech impairment. Some TTY models are used with cell phones and some have built-in printers to record the conversation. TTY models with large display help persons with vision impairments.
